Operational Area and Focal Group
In beginning, JANAMANGAL (Center for Independent Living) worked in Kishore Chandrapur gram panchayat (local self governance) under Nilagiri block of Balasore district, Odisha, India. Then it spread its activities in other gram panchayat named as Pithahata, Chhatrapur, Telipal, Tentulia, Matiali, Ajodhya, Bhaunriabad, Arabandh Berahampur, Dharampur, Telipal and Garadihi.
 
All the operational areas of JANAMANGAL (Center for Independent Living) fall in the hill track and unaccessable area where the focal group belong to mostly Scheduled Tribes & Scheduled Castes with the category of women, adolescents, small & marginal farmers and landless. Nilagiri block are inhabited by Santal, Munda, Kolhja, Matia and Kondha. Our operational areas are consisting of 62% of tribal communities.
 
Our operational area not fully fit for agriculture. Therefore, the inhabitants and forced to depend on forests and forest produces, daily labour, seasonal business. Lack of suitable employment, sometimes peoples were forced to migrate to other areas which disturb their social lives.
 
Besides lack of education, inadequate housing condition, sick and weak health to lack of medical facilities, negative attitude to life, liquor habits it leads to domestic violence against women and children, quarrel in the family, wider-spread corruption and exploitation were also making the lives miserable for the tribals.
 
Specially we are focusing to violence affected women, currently we are covering 428 violence affected women in our operational area.
